Ja should not be whining
published: Sunday | January 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ISN'T IT ironic that a Govern-ment which long advocated the dethroning of Her Majesty as the nation's ceremonial head of state and the establishment of the Republic of Jamaica is now whining because the British has introduced visa requirements for Jamaicans visiting the United Kingdom?

Like the pro-Independence minded Jamaicans who continue to flee to the British territories (Bermuda, Cayman Islands), the Government would like to have it both ways. You cannot want to dismiss Her Majesty as the head of state, but at the same time want the freedom to travel to Her Majesty's United Kingdom without a visa.

I am, etc.,
