THE EDITOR, Sir:
ALLOW ME to express our profound regret at the untimely passing of the Hon. Hector Wynter. He was a mentor, colleague and friend to my family and me and over the years that friendship never waned.
It was he who first suggested that I become a middle distance runner with dramatic results in the Championship Sports of 1946 for Calabar High School. He was my teacher at Calabar where he introduced me to the beauty of the Spanish language and literature and in a turn of events he did the same for our granddaughter at Campion.
His love of the Classics and his love of Jamaica vied with each other for pride of place in his life in his moving between the classroom and the political platform. He was a true Jamaican. Jamaica is the poorer for his passing and I hope that before too long someone will write a biography to inspire the next generation.
Very few students have had to choose as he did between three international scholarships at the same time as well as a spiritual crisis in a call to the Presbyterian ministry. That he took the Rhodes Scholarship and entered Oxford where we met again is well known.
His was a glorious life of service not only to Jamaica but the entire world through UNESCO. The monuments which he approved in Cuba and China still stand as shining examples of a vision which spans the centuries.
Well done my mentor, my colleague and my friend. We will never forget you because your legacy is written in the lives of the young people you touched when you gave oversight to the University and the Ministries of Government.
Go well then, though untimely into your deserved reward.
I am etc.,
