THE EDITOR, Sir:
WITH THE coming of the new year let me hope for peace and continued love amongst all people through the world. The continued beating of the drums of war by members of the Bush administration is no type of solace for peace-loving people all over the world.
It would be nice if the opinions and expertise of the UN Inspectors would be given more credibility, but it seems as if their work is an exercise in futility.
Congressman Charles Rangel the US Representative from Harlem posed a very good question couple days ago in an article in the New York Times. He said "bring back the draft" which is to say all 18-year-olds would have to register, and serve in the Armed Services of the United States. This would surely level the playing field for all. The rich and the privileged would have to belly-up to serve as well as the poor whites and minorities which are in the majority today in the services.
Charley Rangel went on to say with some of the rich and famous kin in the service they would be more circumspect than to be chomping at the bit to wage war because their sons and daughters would have to be involved up front and centre.
There are 100 Senators and God knows how many members of Congress and only, I repeat only, three have any members of their family enlisted in the Armed Services. The bulk of all the fighting will be done by poor whites and minorities including thousands of boys and girls from our islands, many of whose only reason to enlist is to get some of the college perks from the GI Bill.
I sincerely hope some voice of reason will prevail to stop this juggernaught from engulfing the world on a course of destruction. When Moses came down from the mountain he said nothing about America ruling the world, or being the world's police.
I am etc.,
