The park should have been left open
published: Friday | January 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I DO not agree with the recent temporary closure of Emancipation Park. Too many times in this society the good have to suffer for the bad. In this season of merriment and New Year's exuberance the park will experience peak visitorship. When the majority of decent and law-abiding citizens have to suffer due to the activities of the minority then the criminals and miscreants ultimately win. These corrupt factions feel a sense of power when they succeed in changing the way things operate.

The park should have been left open if only to show these miscreants that despite their abusive behaviour towards this facility and its visitors decency will overcome corruption.

Lastly, if the law is not enforced where the sale of illegal items such as firecrackers are concerned then we as a society will be left open to abuse. Where does the real blame lie?

I am etc.,
