Swimming and Water Polo camps begin tomorrow
published: Thursday | January 2, 2003

THE AMATEUR Swimmimng Association (ASAJ) will begin its swimming programme for the year with two three-day camps at the Stadium Pool beginning tomorrow and ending on Sunday. These are in preparation for the CARIFTA Swimming Championships later this year.

The national swim squad will participate in it's regular Christmas holiday camp while the National Water Polo program, back in the water for the first time in many years, will hold a swimmers camp and officials clinic over the same period.

The Water Polo Camp has been made possible by Air Jamaica, the Official Carrier for the National Swim Team, as they will be flying in the instructor, Mark Koganov. Koganov is a FINA referee who hails from Azerbaijan, but now lives in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

Kognaov was a former professional water polo player, in Azerbaijan, Russia, and Israel, and has coached water polo at all levels. Mark referees University and open level games in the USA.

After a long hiatus, Water Polo seems to be making a back, with over 40 very keen swimmers in training, all hoping for a place on Jamaica's CARIFTA 2002 Team. The CARIFTA Swimming Championships, which Jamaica will be hosting April 19-21, will for the first time include Synchronised Swimming and Water Polo. Jamaica is expected to field a male and female team in the Championships.

The National Squad Camp will be led by Orlando Estrada, Jamaica's new National Development Coach.
