Crime and giving birth to employment

THE EDITOR, Sir:
CRIME HAS always been out of control in this country. Successive governments have been criticised for their ineptitude in dealing with crime and it is even felt that they don't care since they bask in the glory of personal security at the expense of endangered taxpayers.
On December 1, 2002 the Prime Minister unveiled yet another round of measures to fight crime. But are we really serious? These measures, which includes the proposed re-entry of the gallows, sounded like effective antidotes. But I think there is something else! We must never forget that crime is a big business, it is an underworld that employs many people and without any reasonable alternative for them we are fighting a losing battle.
The country has many tasks ahead, for not only does it have to give crime a heart attack but it also has the daunting task of giving birth to employment.
I am calling on all Jamaica, to lay down arms and let us come together and find solutions for the betterment of ourselves and the country.
