THE GOVERNMENT of Jamaica has awarded the contract for the supply and installation of security video surveillance system at the Kingston Transshipment Port and the Port of Montego Bay to Hawkeye Electronic Security Limited. The contract sum is US$684,646.99.
Making the announcement recently at a post Cabinet Press briefing, Information Minister, Burchell Whiteman, said installation of the surveillance system was in keeping with the increased worldwide focus on air and seaport security and particularly to fulfil the requirement of certification of Jamaica two main ports by the United States Authorities. It is expected that by February next year details of the contract should be finalised and the installation exercise under way. The project is to be managed by the Port Authority of Jamaica.
The system will have the capability of providing complete live surveillance to the entire transshipment Port and the Port of Montego Bay and the cameras will be motion sensitive and trigger remote video viewing devices through High Speed Internet Services to e-mail addresses, palm pilots and laptop-type devices. The Information Minister said the system could be viewed in live time from other locations away from the ports as well as from overseas.
In addition, the system will be monitored by control centres, which will be staffed around the clock, at each location with back up sites at each security manager's office.
