published: Wednesday | November 27, 2002

THE FIRST quarter conference of the Caribbean District of Optimist International takes place at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Hotel in Montego Bay from Friday, November 29 to Sunday, December 1 with its main platform speakers being Dr. Godfrey McAllister, motivational speaker, Dr. Aggrey Irons noted psychiatrist, Dr. Heather Little-White nutritionist and Mr. Winston Bennett, insurance executive.

Dr. McAllister's topic will be the conference theme, which is 'Dare to Dream. Commit to Serve'. Dr. Irons will speak on 'Managing Your Dreams' while Dr. Little-White will look at 'Overcoming Adversity Life Beyond the Barrel of a Gun'. Mr. Bennett will be encouraging his audience to 'Focus on the Donut and Not the Hole.'

Special guest for the conference will be Optimist Inter-national Vice President Byron Schaurer while the newly-elected Governor of the Caribbean District for the 2002-2003 year, David Garel, will preside over the conference.

Optimist International, with its slogan, "Friend of Youth", is a service organisation, which had its origins in the United States in the early 1900s and which focuses mainly on assisting young people the world over.

The first Optimist club, the Optimist Club of Kingston, was formed in Jamaica in 1980 and the Caribbean District established in 1996 as a consequence of several clubs being established around the region.

The clubs are involved in numerous projects that place paramount importance on the welfare of young people. For the consistent 'high quality' performance of its clubs, the Caribbean District for many has been recognised by Optimist International as the number one district in the movement worldwide.

Along with the main presentations, the First Quarter Conference will have workshops covering subject areas such as Achievements and Awards, Developing Effective Inter-personal Skills, Optimistic Rejuvenation and Wellness, Mind, Body and Soul.
