Traffic woes
published: Wednesday | November 27, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a resident of St. Catherine and like thousands of commuters I am forced to spend approximately five hours daily (non-productive hours) in traffic on a normal morning.

God help us if there is an accident on the Mandela Highway or the Police or Transport Authority are on the road.

I am aware that efforts are being made to have Highway 2000 completed in the next two years but can't they hurry it up and or find some other short-term plan like putting up a temporary ramp at the roundabout at Jose Marti School and at the Spanish Town bypass to filter the traffic faster so it does not bottleneck?

I am also suggesting that the Spanish Town bypass be used for two-lane traffic to Kingston during peak hours 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and no vehicles are allowed to go across it. If motorists need to go to Spanish Town, they would merge with the traffic and exit at the next turn-off.

Traffic going out of town would be one-way through the town (this traffic is rather light). This could also be reversed in the afternoon.

Or the school start time could be altered to a later time say 9 a.m. This would help as parents needing to reach work at 8:30 a.m. could leave later. Right now almost all schools start between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

I am, etc.,

MICHELLE
