Rescue Spanish Town, please
published: Wednesday | November 27, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

SINCE THE start of the election period, there has been a war in Spanish Town. However, since the elections have come and gone, the number of people killed by political warfare is nearly eight times as much as during the election period.

Men from various places seem to be making decisions even the Prime Minister is afraid to make. We are unable to go to the markets or stores.

There are times when people will not venture on the road unless they hear that Senior Supt. Reneto Adams has paid Spanish Town a visit. One day, over 250 people were stranded between the police station and the hospital. No one dared go close to the town until some guys rode by and said the big man (Adams) is in the town and we could go.

I am appealing to the authorities to rescue Spanish Town in this time since activists from both sides are living by one motto, "If it is alive, kill it". Just how much more people must be killed waiting for a bus or taxi? If the government is afraid to protect the people, then permit the people to defend themselves. The people are now ready to do the job, not just to give information because that is signing our death warrants. What will become of us if and when Senior Supt. Adams retires or dies?

I am, etc.,
