FALMOUTH, Trelawny:
MAYOR OF Falmouth, Councillor Joseph Wright is calling for a statue of William Knibb be placed at some prominent place in Falmouth, along with four persons honoured at a civic ceremony held in Falmouth Water Square as part of the heritage celebration, on Heroes Day.
The four persons are - Mylie McCallum, National Coordin-ator, Mental Health Services who was honoured in the field of community mental health services; Pablo McNeil for sport, Hyacinth Meikle for nursing & family planning and Glaister Rowe for community service. A presentation was made to champion athlete Usain Bolt. This should have been done during independence, but Bolt was absent due to national duties.
Part of the ceremony was a citation to the National Heroes. A brief history of each hero was read and a bouquet laid in honour of each. There were seven uniformed groups on parade, including the police, the Adventist Pathfinders, Martha Brae Burial Society, the Falmouth All-Age School, Red Cross and Brownies and the Falmouth United Church Girls Brigade. They were lead by the Falmouth Marching Band. Councillor Joseph Wright said he welcomed, calling for the statue of William Knibb to be erected in Falmouth. He said, in travelling around the island, he had seen many of the people who played a significant role in history being honoured by a statue. He said that it would be a fitting tribute if a statue of Knibb was placed in Falmouth.
Some others in attendance were Custos Rotulorum, Roylan Barrett who endorsed the Mayor's call; Bishop Daniel Samuels who gave the invocation; and Commanding Officer for the Trelawny Police, Superintendent Jasmine Tomlinson -Brown.
