The JTA has failed our teachers

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE JAMAICA Teachers Association (JTA) at this time should not be feeling comfortable, because it has failed miserably to cater to the needs of teachers. The foremost mistake made by the JTA recently was to have 'let the government off the hook'.

The police certainly made good use of the pre-election period to pressure the government, and thus received a decent salary package. With teachers' salary negotiations still to be resolved, it shows that the government still continue to show scant regard to teachers' plea, for a decent salary package, and the JTA also needs to 'pack up shop'.

For far too long the ineptness of the JTA is being exposed and they continue at the helm of teachers' negotiations.

Whilst teachers continue to be supportive of the JTA as their sole salary-negotiation representative, they will continue to be ridiculed, while other organisations will continue to get what they propose whenever they set out to negotiate on their workers' behalf.

Teachers need to be awakened to the reality that they need proper representation that can stand up in 'thick' or 'thin'.

I am etc.,
