Recount confirms victory for Ennis

By Kimberley Lowe, Freelance Writer

BUFF BAY, Portland:

ERROL ENNIS has extended his lead in the Western Portland recount, to emerge as the undisputed winner of the seat, beating the Jamaica Labour Party's Kenneth Rowe by 291 votes.

The figures from the recount Friday, had Ennis who represents the People's National Party polling 5,814 votes for the PNP, Rowe 5,523 and 64 votes for Rhone Shirely of the United People's Party.

The recount which started Thursday at the Buff Bay Courthouse was conducted under scrutiny of various electoral officials, the press, and Mr. Rowe who was accompanied by three lawyers representing him and his party.

"We expected much better results from the Balcarres Division but that did not happen and they have won by about two hundred and odd," said Rowe following the 4:10 p.m. conclusion to the recount on Friday.

He said his party would not be pressing for a magisterial recount.

Of the 17,135 electors on the voters list in the constituency, 60 per cent turned out to cast their vote on October 16.

A total of 47 ballots were rejected.
