The beginning of a new trend

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THANK YOU for the privilege to express my gratitude to our people of Jamaica for the recent display of maturity in the exercise of their democratic responsibility and free speech. I must also commend the political parties and their leadership for their willingness to avoid violence both in words and deeds.

This election marks the beginning of a new trend in our beautiful country. I must express thanks to the church, the media and all the professional organisations for guiding the political leadership towards decency in political behaviour. Congratulations to the electoral committee for the excellent job of bringing integrity to our election system.

Congratulations to the security forces for organising themselves in a professional and courteous manner. Last, but not least, congratulations to Mr Patterson and the PNP for winning the elections of 2002. It is fitting that the first Prime Minister to take an oath of allegiance to Jamaica is the one who is elected as Prime Minister in three successive elections.

It is incumbent on all Jamaicans at home and away to look forward in nation-building for the prosperity of Jamaica and our peoples.

Good luck to Mr. Seaga as he helps to reform his party.

I am etc.,

MICHAEL ANDREWS
