The Rt. Hon. P.J. Patterson, Prime Minister, has issued the following Heroes Day message - Paying tribute to the greats

Patterson

"AT THIS time each year, we pause to pay tribute to our National Heroes who bravely faced the challenges of their time. Each in his own way had a vision of better human conditions and did not withdraw when difficulties seemed overwhelming.

They did not falter even when the prospect of success was a distant hope. They did not flinch even when faced with paying the ultimate price for the principles for which they stood.

The nation owes them all an immense debt of gratitude for the example they set of remaining true to the causes which they espoused, and for the freedoms which we enjoy today.

Now more than ever, as our society and our way of life seem threatened by both internal and external forces that would shake our confidence in ourselves, the examples of fortitude and courage of our heroes shine like beacons from the distant past and can light our way as we face the future.

Although the challenges our heroes faced were far different from those which confront us in this new millennium, the values and principles for which they stood are just as relevant - steadfastness of purpose; a desire to be a force for good; unswerving commitment to the land of their birth; and unwavering faith in the Almighty.

Not everyone is called upon to make large gestures and attract national attention. But no matter where we live or how we make our living, each of us can make a difference within our communities.

Simple acts of kindness to those around us - perhaps to a child who needs guidance, perhaps to a neighbour who is having difficulties - undoubtedly contribute to the development of the kinder, gentler society that so many of us desire. The ripples of these small acts can grow into a wave of positive vibrations across our entire nation.

Let us pledge this Heroes Day to each play our part.

Let us emulate the example of our heroes and recommit ourselves to building one small step, one simple gesture at a time, a nation of sound values, of unity, peace and love.

May God bless us all and bless Jamaica, land we love."
