Smirnoff Ice Club tour rocks Negril

MARGARITAVILLE, OCHO Rios, was jumping with partygoers on Saturday night as the Smirnoff Ice Club tour made its stop in that North Coast resort town.

The distinctively young crowd was kept dancing, 'onlining', 'logging on', and 'drive-by-ing' to music from the featured disc-jocks of the night Zip 103 FM's Johnny Kool and Liquid alongside deejay Clue and his Desert Storm troupe from the United States.

The Zip jocks, in the form of Johnny Kool and Liquid, whetted the appetites of the party people by playing all the reggae, dancehall and soca tunes they could muster. Hot tracks like Sean Paul's Gimme the Light, Shabba Ranks' More Pon More and every song released on the Diwali rhythm received more than favourable response from the crowd.

Meanwhile, DJ Clue, who commanded the turntables from 1:20 a.m. remained true to his hip-hop roots spinning chart-topping songs like Nelly and Kelly Rowland's Dilemma.

The event, which kicked off shortly after 10:00 p.m., was broadcast live on both Zip 103 and local television. From the early stages it was clear that it was going to be some party as patrons walked in dancing. Those intent on showing off their skills on the dancefloor stayed close to the deejay booth where they were certain to be picked up by one of the television station's roving cameras. Meanwhile, other patrons moved to the beat by the pool or on the upper deck of the property.

One group of young women positioned by some benches which lined the beach area, caught the eye as they performed moves which were as risqué, as they were acrobatic.

"I had to be here yuh know, I hear bout it all week and jus' did waan find some release," said one member of a group of men who said they drove all the way from Portland for the event.

Meanwhile, a group of UWI students said that the event was one of their party stops for the weekend. "It's here, Margaritaville tonight and the Negril Get-away tomorrow (Sunday)," said the spokesperson for this group. When the party ended early Sunday morning patrons left the outdoor venue soaking wet but with smiles on their faces.
