THE EDITOR, Sir:
KINDLY ALLOW me to use this medium to offer my condolence to the families and friends of the former West Indies all-round cricketer Laurie Rohan Williams and his brother Kevin Jenninson who met tragic deaths in a car accident recently. The melancholic mood which now infests the entire cricket fraternity is quite understandable, as they have lost a quintessential sportsman and a stellar all-round talent.
Laurie came to prominence in 1991. He made his first class debut against England at Sabina Park and never looked back. He later went on to establish what would become his best performance at the international level when he bagged three wickets for 16 runs against New Zealand in 1995/96 at Georgetown, Guyana. This performance will be indelibly etched in the annals of cricket history and will guarantee Laurie posthumous praise for years to come.
Laurie despite not being a regular fixture in the West Indies team had an illustrious career which made Jamaica and the West Indies proud. He was never the subject of controversial matters. Laurie was a disciplined and hard working cricketer who epitomised humility. Laurie. Jamaica salutes you, you maybe gone but like the late Collie Smith and all the others who went before you, your love and devotion to cricket will never be forgotten.
I am etc.,
