THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE STORY is told of a man who asked his neighbour to assist him in removing a settee stuck in the doorway. They struggled until they were both sweating. They decided to take a rest.
One said to his neighbour, "We are never going to get this in." The other replied, "You were trying to get it in?
This is the position we seem to find ourselves as a nation. Rather than working together to overcome our economic, social and political disabilities everybody does their own thing and achieve very little in the way of progress.
After 40 years of being independent we still find it difficult to put aside our differences, fears and prejudices. Our minds are still not only fogged by the memory of slavery and crab-in-the-barrel syndrome but we also believe that Anancism is a viable option for achieving our needs.
It is time we wake up from our slumber and realise that we have a choice as to our destiny. We have to do it for ourselves. We can, as a people, if we choose to pull or push together, achieve so much towards making our future secure in the long run.
I am, etc.,
