Give all the boys a chance

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I TRULY think it's a great and remarkable initiative for the Ministry of Education and the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce to have set up a "Truancy Camp" to accommodate young boys of Jamaica with behavioural disorders. Thumbs up to you both.

Having read The Gleaner dated September 3, 2002, I discovered that at the boys' first day a fight broke out among them, which led to the suggestion that at least 30 of the boys should be removed from the camp. I am not in agreement.

The fact is that these boys were placed at the camp because of their indiscipline. The camp should be a place to eradicate indiscipline and instill discipline. You cannot expect the boys to change overnight.

The men of Jamaica are becoming marginalised, so I say to you, give all the boys a chance and just hope that at the end of the camp they would have some self-worth and values about themselves. Getting them to have some sense of direction and purpose in life would be an excellent accomplishment.

I am etc.,
