Wilmot claims crown

WIRY GIFFORD Wilmot continued his hold on the men's Digicel Independence Golf Classic crown at the SuperClubs Breezes Runaway Bay course at the weekend.

The defending champion fired rounds of 75 and 79 for a gross score of 154 and a three-stoke victory over Mark Blakeley (79-78-157) in a field without the island's top amateurs who were on national duty. Third went to Damien Spencer (83-80-163).

The Ladies title was claimed by Darnley Thomas (80-83-163) in a one-stroke thriller over Leiza Blakeley (81-83-164) while Jean Munroe-Martyn (88-91-179) rounded out the top three.

Bill Telling, having apparently recovered from a leg injury, shot rounds of 83 and 79 (162) to also eke out a one-stroke gross win in the Men's Senior section over Sherold Philibert (81-82-163) and first-round leader Hansel Williams (78-85-163).

The SuperSeniors title was comfortably won by Mike Vicens (79-80-159) by 11 shots from Lanswell Gayle (82-88-170).

Carolyn Slatter (88-86-174) secured the Ladies Seniors crown from Barbara Sampson (90-90-180).

On the final day a junior golf clinic, sponsored by Digicel and conducted by members of the JPGA, saw about 25 children participate.
