NATIONAL UNDER-14 representative Dax Vernon tested his mettle against bigger competition but was stopped in his tracks when he went down 6-2, 6-3 to overseas-based Jamaican Ricardo Stewart in boys' 18 singles action of the Capital & Credit All Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday.
In other first round boys' 18 games, Christopher Whitfield defeated Sherold Philibert 6-1, 7-5; Antonio Shirley beat Jamie-Lee Grant 7-5, 6-4 while Brandon Williams survived a spirited fight from Kirk Boland to win 7-5, 7-5.
In the boys' 16 category Philbert McLean, Martin Moses, Christopher Henry and Christopher McKessey all came out winners.
McLean defeated Kyle Elliot 6-3, 6-3, Moses defeated Colin Harvey Lewis 6-3, 6-0, Henry beat Jeremy Harris 6-1, 6-2 while McKessey stopped Anthony Dunbar 6-4, 6-3.
Marts Ann Sinclair beat Janique Bailey 10-4 in the girls' 12 action while top seed Kamika Blake and second seed Kacia Riley both got byes to the next round.
In the girls' 14 division, Leanne Spence and Alexis Chin were among those to advance after defeating Christina McKessey and Aishi Christie 6-0, 6-0 and 7-6, 6-3 respectively.
Raquel Robinson stopped Tian Peralto 6-1, 6-0 in the lone girls' 16 game.
Action also took place in the boys' 10, boys' 12 and boys' 14 divisions.
In the boys' 10 Jordan Senior beat Corey Richards 10-2.
Saeed Thomas outlasted Brandon Smith in the boys' 12, winning 10-9 while Phillip Bond blanked Michael Ammar Jnr 10-0 and Christopher Battaglia got by Jordan Senior 10-5.
Mario Downer defeated Aysi Forbes 6-4, 6-1, Brian Grant stopped Shaddine Douglas 6-3, 6-1 while Battaglia got by Stephan Lyn Shue 6-2, 2-6, 2-2. Lyn Shue retired due to cramps.
