Caribana, no more

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS YEAR'S Caribana Parade in Toronto has seen a number of modifications. First, the city has taken over the event that was already taken out of the hands of West Indians to Canadian corporations and renamed it Toronto's International Carnival.

The Jamaican representation that plays perhaps the most memorable part of the parade did not have a presence this year. Other non-West Indian floats were scheduled to participate. Specul-ation was that the Jamaican floats slow down proceedings (perhaps due to the mass of traffic that it attracts)

But most strikingly was that there was a gay float at this year's Caribana. What does this have to do with the celebration of the abolition of slavery or West Indian culture?

I am etc,
