Mona, Wolmer's win six-a-side titles

MONA High and Wolmer's Boys copped the Jamaica Hockey Federation's under-16 six-a-side school league titles after exciting finals at the Mona field yesterday.

Carla Kelly's field goal in sudden death extra time gave the Mona High girls a 1-0 victory over Immaculate while Wolmer's celebrated a 3-1 triumph over Kingston College.

"We knew we would win, the only question was by how much," said Wolmer's coach Winston McCallum.

"I'm particularly pleased with the performance of the first formers who adapted well to the game in such a short space of time," he said.

Amardo Allen and Andrew Royes who both represent the school in the Pepsi schoolboys' football competition played well. Royes netted twice while the other goal was scored by experienced Nicholas Beach.

Mona were also confident of taking the title.

"We expected to win. I wasn't expecting to score but I was confident that we would beat Immaculate," said scorer Kelly.

Coach Basil Cunningham was a relieved man at the end of the game.

"I was worried that the girls may not have been confident enough but they managed to pull it off and I'm happy. They did well in training and followed specific instructions," he said.
