Elton Tucker, Assistant Sport EditorKINGSTON COLLEGE are poised to run away with the boys' title at the 2002 VMBS/ISSA Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the G.C. Foster College today.
At the end of 20 finals yesterday KC led with 132.5 points, well ahead of Bridgeport Comprehensive 99, Calabar 81.5, St. Jago 58.5 and Jamaica College 43.5.
None of their closest rivals have enough finalists in today's events or the quality on the track to overhaul KC and the North Street-based school should be celebrating from early.
The defending champions continued their strong showing in the field and picked up an important win on the track yesterday when Andre Wellington, in his first year in Class 2, scored an impressive victory in the 100 metres final. He clocked 11.42 seconds to win from Manchester High's Nester Carter (11.58) and Wolmer's Matthew Palmer who was third in 11.66.
Team captain Kimani Kirton gave KC another nine points when he won the Class One discus with a 46.63m throw. Cornwall's Nyon Whittingham took second with 45.04m while Gregory Douglas of St. Jago was third with 44.04m.
Vere Technical's Steve Mullings crowned himself the fastest man at the meet when he dashed to victory in the Class One 100m. Running under overcast skies, Mullings pulled away from his rivals 50m out to win in 10.55. Tesfa Latty of St. George's clocked 10.89 for second while the bronze medal went to Yhann Plummer of Holmwood Technical in 10.96.
Camperdown's Romel Rose romped the Class Three 100m clocking the same time, 11.42, as the Class Two gold medallist. Central High's Dwayne Turner held on for second in 11.67 to beat Mekel Downer of Christiana Comprehensive by one-hundredth of a second.
Christiana Comprehensive's Shaun Smith demolished a strong field in the Class 1 1,500m final to retain the title he won last year. Smith powered away from his rivals over the last 300m to clock 3.55.39, just under eight seconds better than last year's winning time.
Holmwood's Jermaine Myers, the favourite for today's 800m final, was second in 4.00.74 while St. Jago's Marvin Pinnock took third in 4.01.40.
