Infrastructure and rebuilding

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a resident of Little Bay, Westmoreland. I have read many articles in The Gleaner regarding on-going updating of the infrastructure of Jamaica. There are new water mains, rebuilding of bridges, sewage-treatment systems, etc.

My question is this: "Why are we rebuilding systems when some communities do not have these systems to start out with?" In Little Bay, we have no water and the road is barely passable from one direction and not passable at all from the other.

Two days ago, my neighbour's house burnt down. This is certainly not the first house that has burnt since I have been there. Because there is no water and it has been very dry, the fire which started out small, could not be put out. Because the road is so bad, it took the fire truck one hour to arrive.

My neighbour is a single mother of three with very little to start out with - now she has nothing. I would like to see the government of Jamaica concentrate on those communities that desperately need the simple services of water and road before rebuilding services that are already functioning in other areas.
