A Robin Hood approach to public life

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LIKE ALL well-thinking Jamaicans I am deeply disturbed about Dr. Blythe's apparent systematic abuse of power in the NHDC/Operation PRIDE debacle as outlined by the Angus Report.

However, we had so many scandals breaking each month that we may overlook certain detrimental trends in corrupt practices that are being developed in both public and the private sector.

For example, no matter how corrupt the actions are so long as the persons declare that the actions were honest mistakes or not for personal gain and for the benefit of poor people, no actions should be taken, or if taken - it should be minimal.

We need to make the leaders both in public and private sector know that this Robin Hood approach to public life has been outlawed centuries ago.

Also we need to let them know that we are intelligent enough to understand that personal gain does not only mean putting money in their pockets or bank account.

We understand that personal gain can be derived by abusing power and public funds to influence party delegates and Members of Parliament to support persons seeking higher office in the political party hierarchy.

I am, etc.,
AINSWORTH DICK
Kingston
