Every ghetto needs a don

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN ONE of the recent Mountain View Avenue disturbances, a Minister of government said that one of the reasons for the problems in this community was the absence of community leaders. Being naive, I said to myself, there they go again trying to legitimise the role of the don in urban governance.

Today, I want to say I am wrong. Anyone who visited the University of the West Indies must have seen the need for good leadership. This is a place where guests dare not use the main entrance. This is a place that is run by Ph.Ds, yet they enact a policy whereby their guests are harassed by persons without CXCs.

Today, I want to say I am wrong and to agree with the Minister that every ghetto, even an intellectual one, needs a don.

I am, etc.,

GEORGE GILBERT
