The Zim Mediterranean, which will call at the Port of Kingston on March 29, 2002.ON MARCH 29, 2002, Zim Israel Navigation's newest 4,839 twenty-foot equivalent Unit (TEU) vessel, "Zim Mediterranean", will make its inaugural call to the Port of Kingston.
Zim Mediterranean is one of six 24-knot ships being built by Zim to replace seven 21-knot ships currently deployed in Zim's main global Service Zim Container Service (ZCS). The seven 3,029 TEU ships will in turn be transferred to Zim's second global service Asia Mediterranean Service operating between the East Mediterranean, through the Suez canal to the Indian Ocean and the Far East, Pacific Ocean and the west coast of North America.
This global service is currently composed of two separate services (Asia-Med Service and ZCS) operating smaller capacity vessels. Hence, these global services will also benefit from the upgrade.
Zim Navigation, whose local agent is Carib Star Shipping Limited, sees the new vessels as part of its effort "to give an appropriate answer to the growing needs of the company's customers in the international trade and take advantage of the present new buildings' prices as compared to the current charter rates".
Zim Israel Navigation Company is ranked among the top shipping companies in the world. Since 1945, customer service and satisfaction has been the hallmark of the company, which has been established through constant modernisation and improvement.
