Gladstone Wright to be laid to rest today

AS THE police continue their investigations into the brutal slaying of businessman Gladstone 'Gladdy' Wright, family and friends continue to mourn the loss of a "good man", one who cared and tried his best to help the community in which his business was located.

Mr. Wright will be buried today after a funeral service at the Stella Maris Church, St. Andrew, at 12 noon.

According to police reports, on Friday, March 15, Mr. Wright was about to close his businessplace 'Liquor Fountain' at 100A Barbican Road, St. Andrew, at about 7:00 p.m., when an employee raised an alarm about men on the compound.

It is alleged that the men entered the businessplace brandishing guns and opened fire, hitting Mr. Wright four times. He was pronounced dead on the spot.

No motive has yet been established for the killing.

According to his brother, Norman Wright, his death will create a void that will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill. "We are still trying to come to grips with his death, but it is impossible to imagine who would want to do such a thing to him. One thing that will always be reflected in our memories is his loving and caring which he portrayed not only to his family but to the community and the church."

Added his brother Lloyd, "since Gladdy's death the family has been inundated with telephone calls from here and abroad. The common sentiments that ran through these calls were that of anger in respect to the brutal manner of his death and sympathy for his immediate family and friends."

Galdstone (Gladdy) Wright was born on May 17, 1941, the fifth child of Oliver and Doris Wright both of whom are deceased. Gladdy, through his scholastic venture at Greenwich Primary, St. George's College and Rapid Results College, began his accounting career at R. Hanna & Sons Ltd. where he worked for 11 years as a junior accountant.

In 1972, he moved to National Packaging Corporation Ltd. where he also worked as an accountant. From National Packaging, he moved to IGL where he held the position of accountant and credit manager and after four years at Bata, in 1984 he moved to CMP. It was from CMP that he moved in August of 1994 to operate and manage his own business, the Liquor Fountain at 100A Barbican Road.

According to his brother Lloyd, Gladdy was an active member of the church where he served as Eucharist minister. He was a member of the Stella Maris and St. Richards Church where he was a active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society which assists the poor.

Gladstone (Gladdy) Wright is survived by his wife Rema, three sons Garth, Marc and Dayle; three sisters Daphne, Elaine and Olive; and four brothers John, Anthony, Norman and Lloyd.
