A crying shame

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I'VE BEEN reading with some concern about the frequent breakdown of several fire trucks and other support vehicles in Jamaica.

Several communities Fire Department trucks are out of service because of bad tyres and simple mechanical problems. This is a crying shame.

No government vehicles should be out of service because of simple maintenance problems. It's incompetence, bad management. In this day and age you can find parts even at the supermarket to fix one's vehicle.

A friend once said to me, "All you need to keep your vehicle on the road running is money and a good mechanic", and I am sure Jamaica has the best mechanics in the world.

I have a 1996 Ford SUV and it has never broken down on the highway and I am all over the place doing high speed driving.

How often does a fire truck leave the firehouse? Maybe one of the problems is the constant habit of getting vehicles from Japan and England when it would be easier to purchase trucks from the US where it's easier to obtain parts from as near as Miami. I think the officials should give this a look see.

The best vehicles are made in the United States and the possibility of getting parts are easier. We're going backwards constantly, when things should be getting easier.

I am, etc.,
