Chuck misses the point

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I TAKE great offence at Delroy Chuck's (Feb. 27) repeated slander of those Jamaicans who refuse to either vote or enumerate while ''enjoying the benefits of democracy.'.

As someone who will not be voting in the forthcoming elections, and definitely is not "enjoying" democracy in Jamaica, I dare say that Mr. Chuck is completely missing the point: the reason so many Jamaicans are rejecting the democratic process is not because we are apathetic or lazy or ungrateful of our blessings, but because we are thoroughly disgusted with the political parties and the approach to governance in Jamaica.

As Peter Espeut claims (ironically, in the column right next to Chuck's), the choice is basically between Tweedledum and Tweedledee -- two inept, corrupt, violent, patron-client factions, which offer virtually identical economic (non-) visions.

I am, etc.

A DISGUSTED NON-VOTER

(BUT NOT DISENGAGED!)
