THE EDITOR, Sir:
LET ME compliment C.R. of Old Hope Road whose complaint appeared as Letter of the Day in The Gleaner edition, Thursday, January 31, 2002, highlighting the inexcusably dangerous practice by some of our privileged youths who engage in motor racing at nights on Old Hope Road and Garden Boulevard, Mona.
Be advised Sir, that this activity is extended to Hope Boulevard, Hope Pastures, Charlemont Drive and Charlemont Avenue. The nightmare that is being experienced by residents on these roads and the immediate neighbourhood is immeasurable.
Particularly vulnerable to the offending noises emanating from the souped-up engines and exhaust systems are our Senior Citizens whose right to peace and quiet in their retirement is being completely eroded. The well-being and development of infants and young children are also at risk by such inconsiderate, selfish and insensitive action.
We have been encouraged by the action of the Police reported in the media following C.R.'s letter and we hope continued vigilance and action will be a priority of the Police Traffic Department in this regard.
Those who breach the Road Traffic Act in any shape or form should be disciplined to the full extent of the law. May I encourage Commissioner Forbes to beef up the Traffic Department so that emphasis can be given to prosecution of the owners of vehicles with souped-up engines, 'blackened' windows, windscreens and environmentally unfriendly exhaust systems.
I am, etc.,
