Mayor Atkins responds to 'inept' charge

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I FIND it unfortunate that after serving the Municipality of Kingston and St. Andrew, as a Councillor for 28 years, and then Mayor for 13 years, your reporter Lynford Simpson in his column of February 10, 2002 saw me as being the most inept Mayor the country has had.

We all know that being a public servant is a thankless task, as there will always be someone who sees one's contribution to society as being of no significance/consequence. How did Mr. Simpson arrive at his conclusion? What measurement did he use to arrive at this?

Indeed, he had mentioned some success of the Council of which I am chairman. It is only fair then that I should be credited with this.

Sir, in closing, I will only say that I will continue to give of my best to the people of Kingston and St. Andrew, as I have always done and hope that the majority will see me in a different light.

I am, etc.,

MARIE ATKINS, C.D., JP

Mayor of Kingston

and St. Andrew
