All set for Milo Western Relays

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE STAGE seem set for what could be the best staging of the Milo Western Relays to be run today at Cornwall College, starting at 11:00 a.m.

A record 80 teams, five more than last year's 75 have been confirmed to take part in the one-day meet, the largest outside of the Corporate Area and one of only two meets in the island that have been staged continuously for more than 20 years.

Meet director Ray Harvey and meet manager Tony Myers told The Gleaner yesterday that they were "ready for the challenge" and were expecting "a day full of top-class action".

Thirty-six events, 30 in relays and six 'flat' invitational events will be contested and, according to Myers, the decision was taken to move the start time up by an hour as a large turn out was expected. He was however confident his team of highly trained officials would be able to deal with the increased numbers and said the meet would finish on time.

There will be competition in a number of sections including high school, clubs/institutions, prep and primary, both male and female.

Veteran sports personality Freddy Green, a former General Secretary of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) and trainer of track and field officials, will be honoured as the patron.

The organisers will also honour Holmwood Technical's Nadine Palmer and St. Jago High' Melaine Walker, both of who made the World Championships team last year while still students.

There will be awards for the Most Outstanding Male and Female team, the Most Outstanding Male and Female athlete and the Most Disciplined team. All the top high schools in the island, with the exception of Calabar High have been confirmed for the event, Harvey said, adding that all the winners from last season had been confirmed to defend their titles.

Among the top teams entered are Vere Technical, Holmwood Technical, Queens School, Edwin Allen, Christiana High and St. Jago High among the girls and Kingston College, Holmwood, Munro College, Tacius Golding, Herbert Morrison Technical, St. Elizabeth Technical, Christiana and Wolmers among the boys.

G.C. Foster College, UTech, Montego Bay Comets and Jamalco are among the clubs/institutions teams that have been confirmed.
