Final judging of New Town competition next week

FINAL JUDGING on the master plan for the Clarendon New Town development are expected next week, paving the way for the announcement of a winner in the international design competition soon after.

The panel of judges meets February 11-14, pushing the timetable at least two weeks beyond the original January 2002 deadline for selection.

New Town is one of several 'collateral' projects spinning from Highway 2000, and is being spearheaded by the National Housing Trust.

The competition is being run under the auspices of UNESCO/International Union of Architects. The panel of judges are:

  • Krzystof Chwalibog, architect, UIA representative, Poland;

  • Carol Archer, planner, Jamaica;

  • Carl Chen, architect, Jamaica Institute of Architects;

  • Joy Alexander, National Environmental & Planning Agency, Jamaica;

  • Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, architect, United States;

  • Haroldo Pinheiro Villar, architect, Brazil;

  • Bruno Stagno, architect, Costa Rica;

    A MASTER PLAN

    The deputy members are Nebojsa Minjevic of Yugoslavia, architect and UIA deputy representative; and Merrick Gayle, South Coast Resort Board, Jamaica.

    The competition attracted some 50 entries, five of which were selected for the final judging.

    The aim is to develop a master plan for the 4,000 hectare site which incorporates lands in Inverness, Hunts Pen and Collman's Cockpit.

    The winner gets a prize of US$75,000, the runner-up gets US$50,000 while the third place entry gets US$25,000.

    There will also be consolation prizes of US$5,000 each.
