A play worth seeing

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I recently had the pleasure of seeing the National Theatre Trust's "Trial of a Short-sighted Black Woman", at The Barn. It was a moving experience and I think the play should be attended by anyone seeking some understanding of a basic problem in the Jamaican society.

"The Trial" is about some successful people of African origin who have forgotten or were never aware of the suffering and sacrifices made by those of their forbears who had paved the way from Slavery to Emancipation and Indepen-dence. Unfortunately, this mindless ingratitude, sharper than a serpent's tooth, is rampant in many areas of life in Jamaica.

Lloyd Reckord's stage work is powerful, the acting very good and the message projected by Marcia Leslie, both timely and relevant in Jamaica today. The lesson is telling and there is a satisfactory ending when the admonished players come to their senses and acknowledge the glory of their heritage.

However, out in the real world mental slavery, lack of racial pride and sub-conscious self-denial continue to hinder the advancement of our people and our country. Liberating medicine, such as prescribed and portrayed in "The Trial" is badly needed and I strongly recommend it.

Go to the Barn and see what I am saying.

I am, etc.,
