Letter of the Day - Motor-racing at night on Old Hope Road!

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE with disgust at the seeming unwillingness of the police to find a permanent solution to the numerous complaints that I have made concerning those guys who race their motorcars and motorbikes along Old Hope Road religiously every weekend, and sometimes during the week.

This happens from the stoplight at the intersection of Old Hope Road Road and Garden Boulevard in Mona and up to Papine, and based on discussions with other persons it also happens on Waterloo Avenue, between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.

These vehicles have what I would call powerhouse engines that are very loud, disturbing and frightening at that time in the morning.

I have made numerous calls to the Papine Police, who, I must admit, have been very responsive unlike the Matilda's Corner Police that never answers the phone. Despite all my calls, the relief is only temporary because after the police have left, the guys just resume their racing.

I crave your indulgence in having this matter urgently addressed. This problem has been happening for over two years without any resolution in sight. These guys carry on their activities with scant regard or respect for the persons that reside in that area.

Why can the Police not enforce the law and halt this unlawful behaviour? Why are these guys not prosecuted or their vehicles confiscated? I have seen vehicles confiscated for lesser offences. Is everyone waiting until innocent lives are lost?

As a taxpayer of this country, if I deserve nothing more, at least I have deserved the right to a peaceful night's rest.

I am, etc.,

C.R.
