Ky-mani Marley's 'Many More Roads', nominated for the 2001 Reggae Grammy Award. - Contributed
KY-MANI MARLEY has one of the five albums nominated for the 2001 Reggae Grammy album of the year award. His album Many More Roads has been selected to be up for top honours for the year 2001.
Marley's siblings have won three times before, and his brother Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley is also in the line up for the award this year.
When The Gleaner spoke with him the day after the nominations were announced, Ky-mani said he was surprised at the nomination of his album this year.
"Tink a joke dem a mek, mi sey no a nuh me, is Damian, and dem sey no, is yu and Damian. At no time was it even a remotely a thought," Ky-mani said.
It is the first time that Ky-mani is being nominated for this award, which is now in its 17th year as a part of the prestigious American Grammy Awards ceremony. The Reggae Grammy category was added in 1984 and was first won by the group Black Uhuru for the album Anthem on the Mango Island Records label.
Many More Roads is Ky-mani's second album, his first, Journey, was released in 1999.
Many More Roads is a 12-track compilation released on the Artist Only label. Artist Only has never had a Grammy winner. However, Ky-mani is managed by Clifton 'Specialist' Dillion from Spec Shang records who has tasted Grammy glory with the original 'Grammy Kid', Shabba Ranks, twice with back-to-back wins in 1991 and 1992. To date, Specialist's Shabba Ranks is the only artiste to register consecutive Reggae Grammy wins.
Many More Roads is, in a word, a very 'Marley' album.
Tracks on the album are:
Who We Are
Many More Roads
Heart Of A Lion
Yesterday
Freedom
Love In The Morning
Ska-Ba-Dar
Valley Of Decision
Giving I A Fight
In A De Dance
Warning
Hailie I
This album was relatively unknown locally. Therefore, there is no indication of local appreciation for Many More Roads from last year.
The executive producers for Many More Roads are Tyrone Smith, Donald Smith and Reggae Vibes Production.
