THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WANT to respond to Ms. Bennett's letter published yesterday, regarding Air Jamaica and efforts to transport her son. First of all I am very happy that her son is on the road to recovery. I think it is unfortunate that Ms. Bennett had this unfortunate experience with Air Jamaica and especially in a moment of crisis.
I do not work for the airlines but I really must jump to their defence and suggest that this is more the exception than the rule, and that Air Jamaica does demonstrate a superb concern for individuals more than many larger airlines.
Every year around this time, we see the true spirit of the company as it "pulls out all the stops" to carry home Jamaicans and their numerous pieces of luggage. This is more than can be said of many other airlines who are seemingly committed to policies more than the welfare of the passengers. The service is not always the best but the spirit is heartening.
Each time I fly the national carrier I am amazed at the efforts the company is making to make flying easier for the public. I have no doubt that the management of Air Jamaica will address this unfortunate policy that Ms. Bennett had to encounter. It is the sensible thing to do, especially in a competitive environment.
I do hope that this will not deter people from flying with Air Jamaica but that we can find it in our hearts to forgive and to call on Air Jamaica to address this and all other policies that seem inhumane and inflexible.
I am etc.,
