YOUNG JAMAICAN professional golfers Johnny Bloomfield and Jason Lopez received lessons in just how tough life is among the pros last week.
Talented 22-year-old Bloomfield stumbled at the penultimate hurdle towards qualifying for the lucrative US PGA Tour while Lopez, 24, failed to make the cut in his first event on the Tour De Las Americas (South American Tour) circuit.
Bloomfield started his second PGA Tour Qualifying School event last Tuesday at the par-72 Orange County National course in Orlando, Florida with a superb one-under round of 71. However, his second round of five-over 77 dashed his chances of reaching the final qualifying event and he finished with a gross score of seven-over 295 (71-77-72-75).
That was 15 strokes behind the leaders and nine off the cut-off point. Also competing in that qualifier was seasoned Jamaican professional Peter Horrobin who also missed the cut and, like Bloomfield, came to grief in round two.
Horrobin started with a steady 72 but then blew his hopes with a seven-over 79. He finished with rounds of 73 and 69 but the damage had been done. His gross of five-over 293 saw him finish 42nd (equal) and seven strokes adrift of qualification to the final 'Q School' tournament at the Bear Lakes Country Club, West Palm Beach, Florida at the end of this month.
Lopez was also hit by the second-round hoodoo at the Venezuela Open which teed off on Thursday. He struggled through the first round with a four-over 74 and any chance he had of making the cut disappeared during a second round 78 which included five bogeys and a triple bogey at the par-four 17.
Lopez will now move on to Argentina where he will compete in the Abierto del Litoral tournament at the Rosario Golf Club starting on Thursday.
