THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT SEEMS we can never be sure as to what we really want: Do we want the relocation of the vendors from the streets of downtown Kingston to progress with eerie smoothness, or do we want the removal to take place with riots or anger or mayhem or destruction?
I would like to propose the following:
That a proper mapping of the various areas in Kingston and St. Andrew be carried out.
That a proper indicative record be made of each "top ranking area leader" in each of these areas - and their status be confirmed by police intelligence.
That there be an engagement of these "dons" with the ultimate clearly stated intention of their disengagement.
That the state in its role of maintaining law and order seeks afterwards to implement the law as required.
That the constituted authority be empowered, as a result of our engagement, in their effort to restore normality.
Let us organise these spheres and persons of influence so that they become members of the society that aid in its upliftment and in the restoration of the Jamaica we once knew, with respect for our old folks, chivalry towards our women and children and encouragement for our young people.
The Bible speaks of two paths, one leading to life and hope, the other leading to death and destruction - we have been travelling the last path 957 lives (to 6/11/2001) show that, let us now explore the other path.
I am, etc.,
