AMIDST entertainment, laughter, and the presentation of a fine line-up, Barrington Levy launched his stage show Dancehall Rock 2001.
Levy, who has been involved in the music business since the 1970s, launched what he says he intends to make an annual event. The concert will be held at the Goshen Sports Complex in St. Elizabeth.
"Dancehall Rock was put together to bring back the love that had existed in the dance. It is my way of saying bring back the love to the dancehall," Levy said at a press conference, held at the Hilton New Kingston yesterday.
The artistes scheduled to be on the line-up for Dancehall Rock 2001 include Morgan Heritage, Tony Rebel, Bush-man, George Nooks, Leroy Sibbles, Wayne Marshall, Bounty Killer and other top acts.
The news conference, attended by artistes and members of the media was moderated by Sunsplash promoter, Ronnie Burke, who joked that it was good to see emcee for Levy's concert, Tommy Cowan, on the other side of the fence, seeing that he is a Christian promoter.
Burke, also made jokes at the expense of artistes who promoted their own stage shows. According to Burke, it gives the artistes a chance to see what the promoter goes through. "Sometimes, as promoter you watch the gate to see the people coming through, hoping that people turn up," he said.
Levy also explained what charitable venture part of the profits made would be going. "Part-proceeds from the event will be going to the Goshen Sports Complex in St. Elizabeth, where Dancehall Rock will be staged," Levy explained.
Following Levy's appeal for fans to leave all their weapons at home and come for the vibes, AY5, a segment of the Area Youth Foundation entertained the gathering with their songs of social commentary and relationships.
