Air J engineer on drug charge

A MECHANICAL engineer employed by the national airline, Air Jamaica, was arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston on Saturday and charged with taking steps to export 5.41 kilograms (12 lb.) of cocaine.

He is Wesley Thomas, 32, of Armada Way, Greater Portmore, St. Catherine.

The Constabulary Communi-cation Network (CCN) reported that around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Thomas was about to enter through the main gate to an aircraft hangar when he was stopped by security personnel and the drug found in a bag he was carrying.

He was arrested and charged and is booked to appear in the Corporate Area Criminal Court at Half-Way Tree tomorrow.

A prisoner who was awaiting trial on charges of shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm, who was used in a line up in an identification parade, escaped police custody after leaving the parade room at the Kingston Central Police Station on Saturday.

The police said they have since launched a search for the prisoner, 21-year-old Paul Evans, also known as "Cumfie" and "Kirk" of Rosemarie Lane, Kingston.

The CCN said that after the identification parade was completed some time after 12:30 p.m., prisoners used in the line up were returned to their cells and it was then that Evans was discovered missing.

The police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Evans to call the Kingston Central Police at 922-5076, Crime Stop at 1-888-991-4000, 927-5000, 119 or the nearest police station.

The CCN also reported that a 27-year-old fisherman, Rosine Howell, drowned off the coast of Great Bay, St. Elizabeth, on Saturday. The police said Howell, who also lived at Great Bay, was seen some time after 3 p.m. sitting at the edge of a cliff drinking from a glass what was believed to be alcoholic beverage. About 3:45 p.m., his body was seen in the sea and removed to the morgue for a post mortem examination.
