No Doubt top 3 on 3 tourney

By Charmaine Austin, Staff Reporter

THE Western Union 3 on 3 Basketball competition ended on an exciting note at the National Stadium courts on Saturday.

Highlighting the afternoon's activities was an exhibition match between members of Jamaica's paraplegic basketball team, that recently won the Caribbean Championship.

Spectators watched appreciatively as the wheelchair bound men rolled around the court speedily and skillfully.

Teams travelled from near and far to compete in the much-hyped competition, but at the end of it all, only six grabbed the respective divisional awards.

No Doubt overcame a slow start to win the Men's Open final and the $45,000 cash prize.

The team, comprising former national player Roger Marshall and his division one league counterparts Mugabe Thomas, Andrew Grant and Edward Marshall stopped Catherine Hall All Stars 17-8.

Ole Skool were taught a lesson when they were beaten 14-10 by Sun Rise Blazers in the highly exciting veterans' final.

Bullets edged Red Raiders 16-13 to take the Women's Open crown while Southern Youth bettered More Ups 21-13 in the Under-17 boys' final.

The Slam Dunk contest was won by Dwayne Brown of Don's All Stars. Brown scored 133 of a possible 150 points.

Southern Youth's Earl Sinclair shot his way to the top in the 3-point shooting contest.

The 3 on 3 competition was staged in Mandeville, Portland, Montego Bay and Negril with the grand climax in Kingston.

Western Union's marketing manager expressed pleasure at the end of Saturday's staging.

"This is our first year sponsoring the 3 on 3 competition and we are very pleased with what we have seen. The level of participation was very good and this is an indication of the rapid growth of basketball in Jamaica.

"People from all walks of life participated. Now it means that we need to show them how we care and appreciate their efforts by sponsoring the competition again," Greenland said.
