St Mary PC appoints acting Supt of Roads and Works

PORT MARIA, St. Mary:

AFTER OPERATING without a Superintendent of Roads and Works for more than a year, the St. Mary Parish Council has obtained the services of regional engineer, Mark Henry. He will be based in Port Maria and act as superintendent until someone is appointed.

Mr. Henry was introduced to councillors at the Parish Council monthly meeting on September 13 by Mayor Fitz Nicholson.

In the past, councillors had expressed concerns that the Council's work was being hampered because a superintendent was not in place. Mayor Nicholson had always emphasised the need for competent persons to fill the post.

The meeting also heard that the Council received $500,000 to assist areas in the parish that have been affected by drought. Mayor Nicholson said he has ordered that a water truck be put on a 24-hour service to alleviate the situation.

During the meeting, Councillor for the Retreat Division, Leon Francis, appealed for help in solving some of the problems in his division. He said that in Three Hills, residents have been suffering a dust nuisance for several months. The main road has been undergoing repairs by the National Works Agency, but it was only partially paved, he said, adding that the unpaved section was causing the nuisance. A roadblock was mounted in protest sometime ago, and an appeal made to the Council for assistance with a sprinkler.

Secretary manager, Sheldon Peart, informed the residents that it was a costly exercise and that the Council could not afford continuous sprinkling as the vehicle had to be hired.

Another matter mentioned by the Councillor was the non-collection of garbage for the past three weeks. The Mayor assured him that Northeastern Parks and Markets would be contacted immediately to collect the garbage.
