Jamaicans find corruption rampant - Poll

MORE than 70 per cent of Jamaicans believe that the level of corruption in Jamaica is very high and much higher than it was five years ago.

These findings are the results of a survey carried out by Don Anderson and his team of researchers from Market Research Services Limited on behalf of The Gleaner Company.

In their answers to the question: "What is your view on the level of corruption in Jamaica today? A little more than 71 per cent of the islandwide sample of 1,000 persons 18 years and over, feel that corruption is not only rife but definitely on the increase.

This view according to the survey is widely held by the younger respondents and those respondents within the upper classes.

The findings show that 71.4 per cent of the respondents feel that there is a lot more corruption now when compared to five years ago, while 13.2 per cent feel that there is only a little more corruption.

Those who believe that corruption is about the same as it was five years ago make up 12.6 per cent of the sample while a smaller fraction, 2.5 per cent, think that there is a little less corruption now. A mere 0.2 per cent felt that there is a lot less corruption now.

The group of persons who felt that corruption is very bad in Jamaica today were among the 18-24 age group. Eighty per cent of these respondents held this view. These persons felt that corruption was virtually a way of life in Jamaica.

Those respondents who felt that corruption is not so bad in Jamaica today numbered 6.3 per cent while another 0.6 felt that Corruption is "not at all bad." A smaller fraction 0.2 per cent had no response.

The poll was conducted between August 14-28 following the spate of violence, primarily in West Kingston which emanated from the raid on Tivoli Gardens by the security forces. The sample error is plus or minus 3.2 per cent.
