THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS said: "He who pays the piper calls the tune." The Sumfest organisers are to bear full responsibility for the repulsive behaviour of the people they employ in their effort to make money. This is not about lifting up Jamaican music and exposing people to our culture. It is simply greed.
They knew who they were employing to perform and what they were capable of. If it was made clear to these artistes that one word of profanity, indecency or violence would meet with the harshest censorship - the withholding of payment due - there would never be any hint of the kind of vulgarity to which Jamaica was exposed.
When will we say enough is enough to these greedy businessmen who will sell the soul of our nation for a mess of pottage. Before we license people to expose their vacuousness to the rest of the world on behalf of Jamaica, we should consider carefully what it will do the soul of the nation. They have no excuse, they could have unplugged the microphones and demanded that the purveyors of filth leave the stage.
Then again it takes real men with real courage to bring change. It seems this is Jamaica's greatest lack at this juncture in our history. Constantly we devalue our nation and sell ourselves to the lowest bidder. Short-term gain, long-term pain. Let true Jamaicans take back our nation and "reorder" for our children.
