'Net plan progressing

PLANS BY the Post and Telecommunications Department to take the world to local communities via the Internet are proceeding and kiosks are being installed in post offices across the island to facilitate access.

"Internet kiosks have already been installed in 11 locations with 12 more placed but needing configuration from Cable and Wireless Jamaica," says Deputy Postmaster General, Michael Gentles.

Cable and Wireless Jamaica is the Post and Telecom's partner in the venture.

Kiosks have already been installed at Constant Spring, Cross Roads, Greater Portmore, Linstead, Port Antonio, Western District, St. Thomas, St. Ann, downtown Kingston, and at the Central Sorting Office.

Those post offices fitted with kiosks but not yet operational include Allman Town, Denham Town, Montego Bay, and Yallahs, St. Thomas, reports JIS News.

An additional 30 kiosks are to installed under the programme, which is part of a drive to upgrade standards, modernise the service, and provide value added services that are technology-driven.

Teleboutiques are also in at various location, providing services such as fax transmissions, money transfers, and Internet access.
