Cuff leads JDF to victory

NATIONAL player Wayne Cuff scored an attacking century to guide Jamaica Defence Force to a crushing 160-run win over leaders St. James in their Jamaica Cricket Association's cricket competition at Up Park Camp Saturday.

Scores: JDF 334 from 50 overs; St. James 174.

Batting first JDF lost their first wicket with the score on 22.

Cuff (111) and Marlon Kennedy (70) featured in a 142-run second-wicket partnership before Kennedy departed at 164 for two. Cuff who hit 14 fours and a five from 107 deliveries added another 83 for the third wicket with Anthony Folkes who got 36. Cuff was eventually caught and bowled by Damion Gray who finished with five for 68 from his 10 overs at 247 for four.

Warren Medwynter 24 and Norman Hutchinson 16 also got among the runs. Chester Sterling supported Gray with two for 64 from 10 overs.

When the visitors replied, they never looked likely to get the required runs. Owen Burke 34, Nicholas McFarlance 23, Sterling 21, Malden Miller 19, Gray 16 and Ryan Wong 14 all got into double figures but did not progress much further. Captain Paul Brown three for 39, Omar Ellington two for 20 and Medwynter two for 34 put the soldiers in command.

In other matches played on Saturday Manchester crushed Police by 84 runs.

Scores: Manchester 231 off 46.3 overs; Police 147 off 29.5 overs.

Invited to take first strike by the home team, Manchester led by Howard Jamison (54) and Lancelot Warren (37) put on 97 for the first wicket. Gray Graham 64 and Denroy Morgan 25 also contributed to the competitive total. Everton Tabannah took four for 31 from nine overs and Marvin James four for 47 from nine overs but they could not prevent the visitors from scoring over 200.

When Police replied they could not withstand the bowling of Morgan who had five for 32 from 10 overs and Aden Frew two for 37 as they were bowled out for under 150. Only James 44 and Kenute Asquith 29 offered any resistance.

AT ALPART SPORT CLUB: Defending champions St. Ann recorded their first win of the competition when they defeated the winless St. Elizabeth by one wicket.

Scores: St. Elizabeth 146 (Kenroy Williams 34; Xavier Marshall 3-17). St. Ann 147 for nine (Lincoln Edwards 31).
