'Mek Wi Hail Him Up' awesome - St. Theresa's gospel concert enjoyable, soul enriching

Papa San

A LATE start to St. Theresa Preparatory's Mek Wi Hail Him Up gospel concert did not prevent the patrons from having a good time.

The concert, which got off to a late start due to a power outage, was destined to be soul enriching and enjoyable from the beginning. The praise and worship section, which got the ball rolling, had members of the audience singing and paying tribute to their maker.

However, what really laid the foundation for a good night was St. Theresa Preparatory student, Sajay Powell's rendition of Lamb of God which had the fair sized crowd listening and meditating. Her performance was greeted by occasional blasts of applause as the patrons sought to show their appreciation for her melodious voice.

Her mother, Daphne Wong, did an original composition along with a few well known pieces. While her performance was not as welcomed as her daughter's, she showed how talented she was by playing the guitar and singing. Unfortunately, the audience had obviously come to see the bigger acts and soon she exited the stage to make way for them.

Birthright followed. The group's entry had patrons at the Ronnie Williams Entertainment Centre rocking to the beat of Ron Kenoly's Ancient of Days. They quickly got down to business and incorporated everybody, from band member to each patron, in their performance. They injected energy into old and young alike with their fast paced songs such as Mary Mary's Shackles Off My Feet. They also had the crowd eating out of their hands with their catchy rhythms and occasional conversation.

Sons and Daughters then hit the stage. They provided the audience with much needed rest from Birthright's energy-filled performance with slower songs such as His Name Is Jesus -- but not for long. Soon, Sons and Daughters had the crowd mesmerised with their dancehall like sound. Patrons danced, worshipped, sang and shouted as Sons and Daughters delivered their message.

Papa San, the final act of the night, was awesome. In between deejaying his message from God, San took the time to encourage the members of the audience to praise God. His lyrics were clear even though some were delivered at top speed. Midway through his performance, some members of the audience showed signs of fatigue after trying to keep up with him.

San continued nevertheless. He spoke of his overcoming divers temptations, how he would never stray from the path of righteousness as he took the time to encourage his audience. His lively performance ended what was a good night.
